People who have no idea about problems shouldn't explain them to customers...

The problem in question was down to link speed negotiation. I set the speed manually, and just unplugged/plugged the cable to make sure the change took.
The customer had it explained by someone else as "a loose wire at the back of the router. Barry plugged it back in and it's working again."
